Many of the FIFA 19 Ultimate Team formations require some midfielders that have a natural aptitude to defend. Central defensive midfielders distinguish themselves for being especially aimed to help the more retreated line of their teams. According to their attributes and their work rates, they can also be useful for starting attacks. They are players that occupy a very strategic position in the field.

Kanté is by far the most popular defensive midfielder.

There are a variety of attributes in a central defensive midfielder that you have to give attention: defending, so that the first defender of team works; strength, so that you win all brawls in a prone area of the field; heading, to win possession in aerial moves like goal kicks; pace, so that you cover the most terrain on the field as possible; stamina, so they can equally participate in offensive and defensive moves (especially useful for players with high/high work rates); passing and possession so that he can properly start attacks. In our opinion the two first are the most important.

Normally using a central defensive midfielder is associated with having a deficit of elements in your defence. So, it makes sense that when you search for a player to occupy this position you’d want players that can defend.

Kanté (who else?) is the one who defends better.

The area of the field occupied by the central defensive midfielders is the one where most ball disputes happen. Strong players will have a higher probability of winning the ball.

There’s a lot of muscle between the Premier League defensive midfielders. Wanyama and Eric Dier are good examples of that. On the other hand, there’s James McCarthy. Even though he’s a decent passer, he rarely wins a physical brawl due to being one of the weakest central defensive midfielder in the EPL.

In our opinion, Kanté is the right choice for this position. He is the CDM who gives more security to the back line but he is also a good offensive player. However, you will need to have a small fortune to buy him. Fabinho is the best alternative to him but, again, not everyone will have enough coins to buy him. In that case, we suggest you Fernandinho. Matic is also a great player but, because of his speed, we only reccomend you for formations with two CDMs.

There are also good options that are available at a cheap price who are still good quality-wise, like Ndidi or Gueye. However, if you only need a CDM who stays back supporting the defence, you should try Wanyama. Jordan Henderson is not in our top 10 not because he’s not good enough but because doesn’t have the right attributes to play in this position.

Like it happens with the CDM position, there is a centre midfielder who is much better than the other ones. In this case, it’s Pogba who stands out.

Centre midfielders are responsible for discovering lines that break the opponents defence. Their passing quality has to be really good so they can assist forwards.

Even though Pogba and Jorginho have a great passing stat, Fábregas is the CM who does it better in the Premier League.

A Centre midfielder usually needs creativity. Good dribbling allows the team to move forward, creating potential disequilibrium’s.

Moussa Dembélé and Naby Keïta are the centre midfielders with best dribbling stats in the Premier League.

In our opinion (and probably for everyone!), Pogba is the right choice for this position. However, you will need a lot of coins to buy him. Dembélè is the best alternative to him. He is a very balanced player capable to support the attack but also good enough to help the defence.

There are also good options that are available at a cheap price who are still good quality-wise. Our third choice is Kovacic but, if you need someone better on the defence, Fred is also a good option. Jorginho is a very popular player in the community, but in our opinion Gundogan, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Seri would give more quality to your team.

If a CAM is a good dribbler, he can make all the difference when the team is attacking.

David Silva is again the best dribbler of the Premier League centre midfield.

Kevin De Bruyne is an amazing player. He is the CAM with the best shooting, passing and physicality stats in the Premier League. For unlimited budget squads he is irreplaceable. If your budget is limited, you don’t have to get upset because Eriksen is also a very interesting player.

The wingers are responsible for giving game width in the attack. They’re normally very explosive players.

There are three fundamental attributes for a winger: pace, dribbling and passing.

Pace is probably the biggest weapon of these players. They use it to evade opponents and getting to the other side, many times via sprints on the side lines.

The Premier League is extremely well served in this chapter: five gold players have pace over 90. One of them is the fastet player in the game.

Just being fast doesn’t cut it to reach the opponents box, having good dribbling to surpass the opponents’ players that appear on the way.

There are a lot of players gifted in dribbling, being Mahrez, Salah and Bernardo Silva the best.

When reaching the opponents box the winger has to decide what to do. Normally, they choose to cross to the forwards. That is why it’s important for them to have good passing.

Mata, Bernardo Silva and James Ward-Prowse are clearly the best fitted passers between the remaining right wingers.

Salah is the player of the moment and it’s easy to understand why. He plays a lot. It’s not easy to choose the best alternative to him. Willian has a better work rate but Mahrez is better on the skills.

If you want even more speed, you can go with Sterling or Luca, and avoid Juan Mata. He has good stats but he shouldn’t be an option because of his speed. A player in this position must be faster.

There’s a proportional quality between the left winger and his dribbling. It’s natural to see Hazard as the most highlighted in this chapter.

The weakest point of the Premier League left Wingers is surprising – passing. Only Hazard offers good quality passing. Richarlison and Welbeck, for example, could’ve been an option to consider filling this slot in virtue of their other stats, but they are affected negatively for missing frequently passes to their more forward team mates.

Hazard is clearly the best left midfielder playing in this league. His passing and dribbling stats are the highest ones. Sané and Mané are the best alternatives to him.
