In La Liga, Šuker was highly regarded, showing consistent form with Sevilla and being consecutively amongst the division’s top goal scorers. He signed with Real Madrid five years later, and was again amongst the league’s top scorers. While at the Santiago Bernabéu, he helped Madrid claim the Liga and UEFA Champions League titles as well.
The crowning moment of Šuker’s career was the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France, where he won the Golden Boot by scoring six goals in seven matches. He also won the Silver Ball as the second-best player of tournament, behind Ronaldo.

Davor Šuker started his career in Yugoslavia with hometown side NK Osijek. His performances in the 1988-89 season, where he finished the league’s top goalscorer, saw him snapped up by Dinamo Zagreb. During Šuker’s two seasons with Dinamo Zagreb he averaged more than one goal in every two games and earned his first international cap in 1990. After helping Dinamo achieve back-to-back second place league finishes, Šuker switched to Spain in 1991 when Sevilla came calling for his services.

Davor Šuker was snapped up by Spanish giants Real Madrid in 1996 and he re-paid their faith instantly. He scored 24 goals in his first season, which helped Real pip rival club Barcelona to the La Liga title by just two points. The following season Šuker was part of the squad that led Real to a UEFA Champions League title. Šuker found fame on the international stage at the FIFA World Cup™ in 1998 where Croatia stunned the footballing world by finishing third, with Šuker winning the Golden Boot.
