Each month, six to eight players are selected to be voted as the best player of the month.

Upon the official announcement of the winner, EA promptly launches a Squad Building Challenge tailored to the victorious player. Upon successful completion of the challenge(s), participants are rewarded with a tradable special Player of the Month (POTM) version of the winner. These unique items boast boosted stats and dynamic art, enhancing the gameplay experience for those who acquire them.
The first player of the month item was assigned to the award winner of August 2016, in FIFA 17.
Each season, Electronic Arts releases eight to nine Player of the month items from the Premier League.
