Introduction to Formations in FUT 16
Modern football is more tactical than ever. That’s why formations are so important in Ultimate Team mode. In fact, they always were. A good player with a top team may lose a game if he is playing in a non-suitable formation.
Unlike what happens with other game modes, in Ultimate Team there are only 25 formations and you have to pick one of them. If you want to change it, just go to your active squad screen and access the formations box pressing your LT/L2 button. If you are not completely happy with your formation, you can adjust it to your play style and needs by using a custom tactic or changing the players’ mentality.
FUT has started with 17 formations. Then 5-4-1 has dropped and in FUT 14 nine new formations were added to the 16:
4-2-3-1 (2)
4-4-2 (2)
4-1-2-1-2 (2)
4-1-4-1
4-5-1 (2)
4-3-3 (2) “Hold”
4-3-3 (3) “Defend”
4-3-3 (4) “Attack”
4-3-3 (5) “False 9”
In the same year, EA decided to remove the formations cards which means that players and managers no longer had to play in the right formation in order to keep chemistry high. However, in EA Sports FIFA (aka FIFA 16 Mobile), formation cards still exist.
Almost nothing has changed in FIFA 16 regarding FUT formations.

Widely used in the world of football and in the Barclays PL in particular. Similar to 4-4-2 but one of ST backs for CF.
Better for a passing team and less direct.
The CF can be used to be the creative force or to break up play.

New Stuff
For experienced Ultimate Team gamers, most of what we have published here isn’t new. In that way, we have created this short chapter to show what has changed with formations:
FUT 15 >> FUT 16
- There are no changes
FUT 14 >> FUT 15
- Many links were removed
FUT 13 >> FUT 14
- Added 9 new formations
- Player’s formation cards were removed
- Manager’s formation cards were removed
- Formation no longer has impact in chemistry
To choose a formation is a step much more important than many gamers think. It can make the difference between winning and losing many matches. This guide gives you all the tools you need to decide well.
Hi , i play fifa 12 manger mode and here’s my squad :
(most players are the default players , while some are different bought from transfers)
Anyways , here are my players
CB- Raul albiol , sergio ramos , pepe , ricardo carvalho ,
RB- carvajal , arbeloa
LB- marcelo , coentrao ,
CM -granero , sahin, ,xabi alonso,
RM-altintop,pedro leon

CF- lucas podolski
RW- di maria
LW- cr7
I wasnt able to score goals using default 4231 formation of rm ,and i love playing speedy counter attacks using the full width of the pitch
So , i started using 433(4) one , against weak teams i totally destroy them( but without clean sheet) but struggle defensively against strong teams.
My starting lineup in 433(4) formation is as follows-
Rcb-raul albiol(86)
Lcb-sergio ramos (87)
Rb-carvajal(67)
Lb-coentrao(84)
Rcm- alonso(86)
Lcm-khedira(83)
Cam-modric(88)
St-banzema(87)
Rw-di maria(85)
Lw-cr7 (93)
I am deadly on counters , sometimes i make stupid mistakes and waste the counters , but otherwise i score many goals , but i cant defend properly
While defending i manually move my cm’s and cover the opposition teamates to cut passing lanes and then when the opponent is without support i take away the ball , but despite that i still concede goals although my defenders always cleanly take away the ball ,
So , what should i do ? Change formation, (but i like the kind of counterattacks this formation provides) or change squad , or adjust work rates or make some custom formation , i love the 433 system in football , how to produce counter attacks like carlo ancellotti did with flat 433 using rm ?? Pls help , i have to spend a lot of time trying to win against quality opposition teams ,
I play against ai
The most important is practice and being focus. Really. If you want to change anything else, you should try a slightly different formation since you already have top-quality players.
Pls what’s the best formation for Arsenal as I got arsenal squad? Sorry it too late to ask this Q on 2017
What do you think of these 3 back formations, specifically 3-4-3 and 3-4-2-1. For the longest time I stayed away from using them, but have been using them with great success in career mode. I rather like having wide forwards or wingers with potentially overlapping wide mids. It allows me in my career mode to overwhelm the opponent with numbers. Although, I’m aware that career mode and UT have a very different game engine.
Perhaps it could work well with Jordi Alba and Di Marcos as wide mids and of course multiple CB’s who are good with their feet to play out the back, for example Boateng. What do you think?
Yes, UT is different. The best thing to do is to test them. Both are good unpopular formations but it should be you to decide which one is the best for you, according to your play style and preferences.
What is really the difference between 4-3-1-2 and 4-1-2-1-2 (2)?
Is it just different in terms of chemistry links with strikers and midfield?
Good question. In the 41212 (2) you have a defensive midfielder and in the 4312 that player also attacks.
In i 433(2) you recommend the CDM to have L/M WR, and I have found that work rate to be a very good advantage for a holding midfielder.
Why are you recommending the other two midfielders to have H/M WR? Is it not a good idea to have one with H/H?
I have tried a lot of midfielders, but now my trio is Carrick, Ki Sueng Yong and Mark Noble. Their stats dont shine, but I find their skills and traits unique.
Hi.
Yes, you can make changes. It is only a suggestion. H/H is not many different from H/M.
You need to try and see what works better with you.
What is the best formation for playing long balls and winning second balls?
I think a lone strong striker that wins in the air and aggressive ball-winning in opponents half.
4141 for example
I struggle to find a CB with L/H Work rate. For a PL side, there are few options.
Gabriel, Collins IF and Amat. Problem is I think Gabriel is not strong enough, and Collins is slow like a turtle, if not slower. Amat is also not one of the best defenders in the game.
Should I consider another CB with M/H WR? Or do you recommend a hybrid solution to this problem (Barzagli or maybe Mustafi)? Or should I stick with the slow, but strong Collins the ginger Pele?
Fact: Collins is slower than a turtle. He’s 42 and the turtle is 45.
In our opinion you should pick good players even if their work rates are not exactly the ones you like.

Hey Rodrigo! Great guide by the way! Anyway, I’m looking for a formation. I like to play passing football and I counter attack a lot. Only problem is, I never cross.
Hi. Thank you.
It may sounds weird, but 5212 could work with you.
Hi again Rodrigo!Sorry i’ve been busy so I haven’t replied. Thanks a lot for the formation! Weirdly,I thought that formation could be good. Thanks again!
Also, do you think this team looks good? I just made it and it is in my budget for a cheap team.
GK:Begovic
LWB:Moreno CB:Mangala CB:Otamendi CB:Zouma RWB:Walker
CM:Mikel CM: Fernando
CAM:Coutinho
ST:Mane ST:Remy
Yes, it is a low budget but quality team.
Hi rodrigo,
I.m currently using 5212 I like to counter attack and long balls….this is.my team
Gk…begovic
Cb…koscielny,cahill,smalling
Lwb…..moreno
Rwb…..kyle walker
Cm….hederson, scnider
Cf….. mane/coutinho
Strikers…..aguero, remy
Please tell me more suitable/better players from bpl than I am currently using for this formation…
help will be appriciated.
Is this for FIFA 16?
Hi I like getting close shots at goal and passing wat is the best formation
You may try 451 (2)
Hi Rodrigo!
First of all I really appriciate this guide made by you with all your experience.
I have made countless teams in various formations, and many are based on your guidelines. I have also tried to mix it a bit, and I guess there are no blueprint set-up that is the best for everyone.
I am a huge fan of the 4-3-3 formations. Especially 433(2) for the defensive responsibility on the CDM, making the other two as “inner runners” as we term them in Norway. In recent times I have abolished players with high defensive work rate. It has had excellent results for my performance, and I intercept more than before. They don’t seem too work too much and stick to their positions, leaving me with a compact team with more control of movement with my stick and teammate contain(R1). I’ve got up to the 1st division with back to back titles in 3rd and 2nd division after months in the 3rd and 4th. Maybe it is the fact that I have aquired more suitable players, and that is more important than work rate? Or maybe myself has improved a lot. It is difficult to know why for sure.
Here is my team:
GK – Casillas IF 86
LB – (H/M) – Gaya IF 81
LCB – (M/M) – Arribas IF 80
RCB – (H/M) – Ramos 87
RB – (H/M) – De Marcos IF 81
CDM – (M/M) – Busquets 86
CML – (H/M) – Iniesta 88
CMR – (M/M) Gabi 81
LW – (H/M) Morales 80
ST – (M/L) Morata 81
RW – (M/M) Tello 79
I use Iniesta as a main man in midfield to come through midfield with passing, turning the play to the less working right side if possible. I mix it up and sometimes play direct up to Morata as a classic target man.
I guess it comes down to my personal style, but I would love to see your views on my theory of WR and my team overall.
https://www.futhead.com/16/squads/10820878/
Thank you.
As you said, it’s a kind of personal. However, I still believe that high defensive WR may be useful.
Your team is OK.

Your picture for the “5-3-2” formation is incorrect. Otherwise, damn-fine guide! Thanks a bunch!
Thank you very much.
It took five months until someone find that the picture was incorrect?! Thank you, my friend.
Rodrigo,
What are your thoughts on this team including WR’s?
4-3-1-2
GK: 86 Cech
LB: Clichy
CB: SIF Koscielny
CB: Chiellini
RB: Abate
LCM: De Bruyne
CM: Marchisio
RCM: SIF Pjanic
CAM: Pogba
ST: 88 Aguero
ST: TIF Higuain
I like to play a lot of short passing to draw out defenders and make gaps for through balls and driven passes from generally a central position.
I would normally use the 4-3-3 2/5, do you think this formation is still suitable?
Thanks
The team looks nice. It is possible to play with that formation and your play style.
Regards
I have around 1mil in coins do you think there are better players for certain positions or just to invest in informs of current players?
You have one million coins? Well, you can make much better team with these coins because you are stucked to chemistry.
Our suggestion: Courtois and IF cards.
Hi Rodrigo, I’ve been playing FIFA for years but mostly as a casual player with friends etc. I’ve given FUT a go this year and it’s great fun. But because I’m a fairly casual player, I’m building a full Valencia team as it’s cheaper and chemistry is great.
Anyway, my online results have been fairly consistent with scores more or less always being 2-1 or 1-1. The common theme is that I concede that one goal VERY EARLY. Do you have suggestions, Valencia players in mind, on what the best formation is? Constantly crossing to Negredo is working decently but I was hoping for more..
Hi.
If you concede a goal very early too often, the problem are not the players. It’s you. You need to be really focus. That’s metal. You need to be relax and calm.
Hi,
Nice tutorial, but i dont know and i can’t find on the internet what passe is
Here.
Hey Rodrigo! can you help me with a team for like 250k ? i have big problems after the new patch… I was in div 1 before the patch and now i have porblem staying in div 3… do you have any tips please help
Check our suggestions here.
Hi Rodrigo,
4-2-2-2 is my formation
BPL Squad: https://s15.postimg.org/rvh1srd4p/Screen_Shot_2015_12_22_at_11_00_28_am.png
Serie A TIM Squad: https://s8.postimg.org/5oc5y6efn/Screen_Shot_2015_12_21_at_8_03_05_pm.png
I haven’t been winning much games recently I like to play with through balls and long balls. Is this the right formation for me or should I change a few players.
Hi.
That’s not the best formation for that. Your players are OK for your budget.
4-1-2-1-2
Suggestion:-
ST R High Medium Heading Shooting
ST L Medium Low Shooting Pace
base on ur suggestion, i wanted to pair sturridge with benteke but the thing is sturridge having 2 stars weak foot, if i were to put him on the LS i worry he will shoot the ball to holland.
So do u recommend me to put benteke on LS and sturridge on the right? any negative on that?
Hi.
My suggestions are only suggestions.
I think Sturridge should be on the LS and Benteke on the RS.
Hi Rodrigo Lopes,
First of all thanks for your reply. May i know why is this your suggestion, despite knowing the fact that sturridge having 2 stars weak foot and benteke is actually right footed? Thanks.
Also, can u please suggest me on my ST department, aguero seems to be distant dream. I have benteke, sturridge, lukaku, remy, welbeck, which 2 do u think should start? n which side to play? Once again thanks.
In my opinion, Sturridge (LS) and Remy (RS).
In my opinion, the most important thing is to know which one is their strongest foot.
Thank you so much Rodrigo for ur time, can you answer me one last question?
Other than costa and aguero, which are the 2 fast, strong and good finishing strikers you would recommend?
Rooney and Sturridge. However, if Rooney is not fast enough for you, try Rémy. He is not as good as Rooney but at least he is faster.
You are really helpful Rodrigo! Thank you for your kind replies. Merry Christmas! Xoxo
Merry Xmas to u too.
Hi Rodrigo,
First of all, Happy New Year! Now that i got myself Aguero and Sturridge, including Benteke and Remy which i own previously. Who do u think should start? And which side should they play?
Thank you. 🙂
Thank you. Happy new year too.
That’s easy: Aguero on the right side and Sturridge on the left side.
Once again thank you for your response and advice Rodrigo! Keep up the good work! Xoxo 🙂
Hey! Do you know what the best formation for crossing is?
3-4-3 and 4-4-2. More details here.
This helped me alot thnx man! 😀
Hi Rodrigo!!!!!
What formation is good for Passing & Long shots…..
Ive made plenty teams by this guidelines, but I often struggle to get fullbacks to have medium/high or medium/medium work rate as most good full-backs has High/medium work rate.
I would like a description of why this work rates are important. Why are no formations recommended with such full backs?
Full backs with high/medium, or even worse high/low like Dani Alves, are players that don’t help the back line. It doesn’t mean that you need to find players with the recommended WR but at least try to reach as close as possible.
Hi Rodrigo
For a player like myself that is a fan of pace and has many pacy players, would a 4-3-2-1, 4-3-3 or a 4-1-2-1-2 (2) work best?
thanks
In my opinion it is 433.
Hi Rodrigo,
I’m having difficulty choosing between a one striker or two striker formation.
I play a lot of possession football and counter attack towards the end when i need to defend a lead.
What formation would you recommend for me?
4-2-3-1 (2) or 5221
Hey Rodrigo ….
1/ best formation for heading( crossing< and the best custom tactic for crossing ?
2/ best formation for high presser ?
3/increase the effectiveness of the wings R/L M . RAW. LAW?
Thanx …
what is passe?
What player instructions you suggest for the 4-1-2-1-2 (2)? Thanks a lot!
Hey Rodrigo,
Amazing guide! I want to play a false 9 as in the past I have excelled with cutting inside with wingers and scoring, i love to have open space to run into on the counter but also build up so i think false 9 is great. Any recommendations on a good cf? Budget 20k
It depends of your team. It has to be someone that links well with the team mates.
What is your team?
Hey rodrigo! thanks anyway 🙂
i would recommend the formation 4222 in a seria Team it is so op in fifa 16.
and the players i use is : Dybala Morata
Mertens Pereyra
Guarin De rossi
Alex sandro Castán manolas Montoya
Handanovic
It will be released sooner than expected.
Hehe i bought a serie a team! I like it:) but i have one problem…. I can’t score 🙁 very time i play against some1 i their goalkeeper gets man of the match …
Can you recomend a striker who can play good with morata? I have higuain but i hate him…
We can’t suggest players we have not tried yet. We will publish the Serie A guide in a few weeks.
I have now made the best team for me in this ultimate team season, following this guide to some point.
I play 4-3-3 (2) Holding, which i find good for counter attacking and organised at the back.
GK – Buffon
LB – Jordi Alba High/medium WR, but very pacey. Since other defenders has high defensive work rate, I can allow him to go forward, offering great help to my left winger on the overlap and on quick counters.
CBL – Chiellini – Low-High – can cover for Alba when he is up. Amazing defending and decent pace. Also good in the air.
CBR – Manolas. Med/High. 81 Pace! good stopper.
RB – Liechsteiner HIgh/High – Good physics and passing ability combined with decent pace.
CML – Iniesta – High/med – pure class, but weak in challanges
CDM – De Rossi – Med/high – A real fighter. Rarely loses 50/50 challanges.
CMR – Marchisio – High/High – Box to box, good in both ends.
LW – Pedro -High/Med – My assist king, good with both legs – can go inside and outside.
RW – Candreva – High/Medium – 4-star weak foot. Shoots well and has good crossing. Can go both ways.
ST – Morata – medium/low – no stress, dribbles good, good finisher, speed dribbler.
I have few alternatives in terms of chemistry. But i need a set-piece specialist, as Candreva is my current best FK-taker.
Any tips on replacements?
Hello Rodrigo! I was wondering if you can recomend a formation with a team for 100k? (Ps4)
I have problem scoring goals and my central backs are so bad….
Why don’t you try our medium budget squad from the BPL guide ?!
hi Rodrigo I want to ask you a suggestion I’m currently running a 4-2-3-1(2) with Lavezzi, Pastore and Salvio and I want to ask who do you think is better as solo striker Vietto or Icardi? Vietto have the better WR but Icardi have a better height and heading. Thanks in advance.
It’s not easy to answer. Icardi has better height and heading but Vietto is much better. If you love to cross, use Icardi. Otherwise, Vietto is a better choice.

thanks
If you have a good budget, we suggest you to try the BPL on 352.
What about a serie a (SWEATY , PACE , LONG SHOT , THROUGH balls ,LONG PASSING ) team
What formation would you advise on fifa 16 ut ipad .
You should never choose a formation based on the league or the players you have.
Formations should be chosen according your play style and preferences.
Hello!
What formation would you recommend for someone who likes to skill and takes long shots?
Maybe 4222
Are the working rates that are recommended in this guide very important to use in game? I have tried this guide before with sucess, but in fut 16 I can’t seem to get the players to play the way I want.
No, the work rates are merely to give you an idea.
Hello! I have a question. Wonder if you can help. In FIFA 15 i played Robben striker with a rf card he got 7 in chemistry. It worked good. I wonder if you know if the player chemistry is the same or different in fut 16 compared to fut 15? Very grateful for answer.
It’s better if anything. Robben would still get 7 chem at striker if he had Lewandowski and Thiago/Alonso linked to him for example.
Why start with BPL when it a the most expensive alongside liga though?
We understand your question. A lower league could be better because you don’t need to have so much coins. However, most of the community asked us the BPL guide and that’s we will do.
Sure Rodrgio, and thanks for getting back to me!
That being said, you will publish the first guide for BPL – when will you do so for Serie A or Liga?
Our plans are:
1 – BPL, 2 – La Liga, 3 – Bundesliga, 4 – Serie A. More guides may be published later but we have no confirmation yet.
Update – replaced Perin by Diego Lopez as a Gk
And Bruma by Fegouli
Here is my Serie a lineup – would like to hear your thoughts on how to improve in terms of quality and chemistry – only missing piece is the CAM
Perin
B.pires Murillo/Rugider Zapata Zuniga
Melo/kondogbia/De young
Iturbe Kovacic/can’t find a decent CAM except for pricey Mertens F.Anderson/Perisic
Palacio jovetic
I also have a hybrid 4-4-2 or 4-1-2-1-2
Alves
Mario gaspar Santos Murillo/Zapata Telles/Zuniga
Melo/Javi fuego
Orellana/Iturbe Kovacic perisic
Rodrigo/Correa Palacio/Jovetic
Please advise for which CAM to get from Italy and omit Insigne please Cz I didn’t like him.
And advise in general
Best,
Ahmed
Hi.
As you know we test all the players before publishing our league guides. Right now we are still testing Barclays PL players (first league guide to be released). We can’t make suggestions about players we haven’t tried yet.
Regards
Hi can you reccomend two leagues i can base my squads around with each costing 35k (i have 70k I PACKED STERLING)
Serie A, Russian league, Portuguese league and Turkish league.
Rodrigo, can you tell me why have you specified the 4-1-2-1-2 (2) formation for FUT16?
What is your rationale?
Also, I am awaiting the FUT guides for leagues and their consecutive players
Hi.
To be honest it is not one of my favourites formations but I think it is a good formation for FIFA 16 because players in the midfield are very close from each other and because it is perfect for a passing style.
First league guide will be form the BPL and should be published in the October’s first week.
This is the first time i play ultimate team.what would be best formation for fifa 16 ?
I believe that it could be 41212 (2) but that is a personal opinion. The best formation depends of many things, including your preferences and play style
