FIFA 19 Ratings Refresh – FIFA 19 Winter Upgrades

FIFA 19 Ratings Refresh

FIFA 19 Winter Upgrades, also known as FIFA 19 Ratings Refresh or FIFA 19 Winter Refresh, are released in February to replicate in the game what is happening in the real fields, updating the stats of the best players of the season. From Feb 15 through Feb 24, over a hundred of the most deserving FUT 19 player items will have their ratings permanently updated to reflect their outstanding form in the first half of the season. Only new base player items found in packs will have updated ratings, but certain existing in-form items will have their ratings automatically updated.

In this guide you will find the release date and time, as well a reliable potential list of upgraded players. You will also understand the boost rules and how the FUT market behaves. After you read it, if you still have any questions about the FIFA 19 Winter Upgrades, you just need to scroll down and check our section with the answers to the most common questions.

FIFA 19 Winter Upgrades

What is an UP card?

Different to what happens on other game modes, and excepting the OTW, RTTF and Headliners cards, the FUT players aren’t automatically updated throughout the season according to their appearances in real life. Some may receive In Form cards, but most players remain with the characteristics they were given at the start of the season. In Ultimate Team, upgrades are made through the release of new cards in two specific times: Summer and Winter upgrades. When a player is upgraded, the cards that start coming in packs have got the new ratings and attributes according to their performance on the real-life pitch.

To each player who is upgraded during the FIFA 19 Winter upgrades season, it is assigned a new regular card which becomes available in packs until the end of the game, replacing the correspondent day 1 regular card. In other words, as soon as the new card is inserted in FUT packs, the old ones can only be found in the existing clubs and in the transfer market. Your odds of pulling the new card from a pack are exactly the same as pulling the original regular card before the update.

If you own the day 1 card of an upgraded player, your card will keep unchanged. If you want the improved version, you will need to buy the corresponding new card in the market or cross your fingers when opening a pack.

FIFA 19 Ratings Refresh Rules

Rating and stats boost explanation

As we already have explained, it is not possible to improve the stats of any regular card. However, if a player stands out in the real world, in such a way that his card becomes strongly outdated, Electronic Arts comes to justice introducing a new type of card.

The FIFA 19 Ratings Refresh affects around 130 ratings. The gold cards are usually improved in 1 or 2 points, while silver and bronze players are usually upgraded by at least 4 points. In exceptional cases this upgrade can sometimes reach 15 points. Usually, the higher is the original rating, the lower is the boost.

It is rare but the position of the players in these cards may change if, they played really well in a different position.

FIFA 19 Upgraded Players Cards are physically identical to the originals, except on rating and stats.

Here are the official rules:

RULE 1
APPLICABILITY

Upgrades apply to new non-inform players found in packs. Non-IF players in your Club will not receive an upgrade.

RULE 2
UPGRADES

If an upgraded player’s new OVR rating equals or surpasses his existing first in-form’s rating, his other items will get an upgrade.

2.1. An exception is made for lower rated players with significant upgrades.
2.2. This is valid for every single IF/special and base UCL items (for both new and existing cards), but not for Scream cards.

RULE 3
THE BOOST

If an upgraded player’s new OVR rating does not equal or surpass his existing in-form’s rating, his other items will not get an upgrade.

3.1. However, if an upgraded player with an existing IF gets upgraded across Quality tiers (eg. Silver to Gold), his lower-quality IF will not get an upgrade. This preserves the in-form’s high value.
3.2. Ratings refresh follow the general upgrade rule:

FIFA 19 Winter Upgrades Release Date

When FIFA 19 Winter Upgrades will be available?

FIFA 19 Ratings Refresh - FIFA 19 Winter Upgrades

The FIFA 19 Ratings Refresh takes place in February. It rewards the players who stood out the most along the first half of the season with the release of new improved cards.

The FIFA 19 Winter upgrades are usually assigned to the players who have played well in a consistent way throughout the first five months of the season, not only in few games, showing that their old regular card was really outdated. As soon as upgraded cards are released, they replace all the respective regular cards that were supposed to be released in packs until the end of the game. That is, the only card you will find in packs is the new one but you may find both cards in the transfer market.

We estimate to see around 130 new cards this Winter. It was officially confirmed that these items will start to be released on February 15 (Friday). In the past years, these were the release dates of the first batch:

FIFA 19 Ratings Refresh Predictions

Predictions of the FIFA 19 Winter Upgrades

There is a strong correlation each year between the upgrades for the Head to Head Seasons and the ones for the Ultimate Team mode. However, there are many players who are upgraded to Ultimate Team but not for H2H. Joining the player’s performances of this first half of the season to our experience of previous years, it is possible to predict most of the upgrades.

FIFA 19 Winter Upgrades Players Cards Prices

What happens to the UP cards’ prices?

As we would expect, as soon as the FIFA 19 upgraded players cards are released their price stays fixed way above the regular ones. These, on the other hand, start their way down. Also, with time the UP cards lose value once their quantity starts being superior to the rest of the cards. The price difference between the UP card initially and the regular card depends on many factors, such as the number of rating points gained, stats bonuses or an eventual position change.

When the player already has at least one IF card, this card is improved in the same proportion as the regular. There are people who choose the risk to invest in IF cards of players that have good chances of receiving an UP in advance because they know that in case that happens the return will be enormous. The bigger the player’s rating and popularity, the bigger is the IF card’s appreciation. In some cases profit can surpass 300%. At a long run, the cheapest cards lose value, while the most expensive ones slowly have their price increased. If you’re thinking about investing in these cards, be careful not to bet on the cards that are already being way too speculated. It’s just that sometimes the speculation is so big around determined cards that, after the upgrades, the improved IF cards’ market prices are inferior to what they were before the announcement. On the other hand, if you have a NIF of a player you think is going to receive an upgrade, it may be a good idea to sell him in advance so you minimize the loss.

FIFA 19 Winter Upgrades FAQ

What you need to know about cards from the FIFA 19 Winter Upgrades

Q: What is the an UP card?
A: It is a non-day 1 regular card that updates the ratings and the stats of the most inform players.

Q: How are players upgraded on FIFA 19 Ultimate Team?
A: Different to what happens on other game modes, the players aren’t automatically updated throughout the season according to their appearances in real life. Some may receive In Form cards, but most players remain with the characteristics they were given at the start of the season. In Ultimate Team, upgrades are made through the release of new cards in determined periods.

Q: What happens exactly if a player receives a Winter upgrade?
A: When a player is upgraded, the cards that start coming in packs have got the new ratings and attributes according to their performance on the real-life pitch.

Q: Who chooses the players to be upgraded?
A: A dedicated team from EA Sports.

Q: How do player upgrade cards look like?
A: They are regular cards (gold, silver and bronze).

Q: What’s the difference between the original card and the new one?
A: Only rating and stats. In some cases the position can also be updated. All the rest remains the same.

Q: How long are FIFA 19 Winter Upgrades Players cards available in FIFA packs?
A: As soon as they are released for the first time, they remain in packs until the end of the game, replacing the day 1 cards.

Q: If I have a card of a player that is to receive an upgrade, will this card get upgraded?
A: No. It remains exactly the same, with the original rating and attributes that were defined initially in the game.

Q: Can a player change categories if he is upgraded enough for that to happen?
A: Yes. As long as the upgrade gives him enough points for that, a player’s NIF card can go from bronze to silver or from silver to gold.

Q: If I have an In Form card of a player that is to receive an upgrade, will this card get upgraded?
A: Depends. Different to what happens with the NIF cards, the IF cards released before the upgrades will be upgraded in the same proportion as those (but automatically) if an upgraded player’s new OVR rating equals or surpasses his existing first in-form’s rating.

Q: Why are there some In Form cards that didn’t receive an upgrade although their NIF did?
A: First because probably the upgraded player’s new OVR rating does not equal or surpass his existing in-form’s rating. If it does, then it is because the upgraded player with an existing IF gets upgraded across Quality tiers (eg. Silver to Gold).

Q: Why wasn’t a certain player’s IF card upgraded if his NIF and UP were of the same category?
A: Probably because that IF card already had the maximum rating for its category: 64 or 74.

Q: It is possible to exist two regular cards of the same player with different ratings?
A: Yes. That’s what happens when a player receives an upgrade, two cards start coexisting: one corresponds to the start of the season and the other has got improved ratings and attributes.

Q: When there’s an upgrade, which cards are the ones that come in packs?
A: The new ones.

Q: Which cards are released first: transfers or upgrades?
A: Transfers.

Q: Do all upgraded players get a new card?
A: Yes. Although, if you own a regular card of a player that was upgraded there won’t be any alterations.

Q: The NIF and TOTW cards are the only ones to be upgraded?
A: No. Every single special card, except Ultimate Scream, has the chance to be upgraded, which includes, for example, the Heroes and Record Breaker cards.

Q: How can I predict which players have good chances of receiving an upgrade card?
A: Even if you don’t keep up much with the real-life football, there are two indicators to help out in this prediction: the number of a player’s IF cards; constant rating upgrades on H2H.

Q: Can a player be downgraded?
A: No.

Q: Can I have both the original and the new card in my club?
A: Yes. However, a squad can only have one of them.

Q: Can a transferred player receive an upgraded card?
A: Yes, he can. Although EA Sports try separating player transfers/player upgrades, there are rare cases in which the same player is both transferred and upgraded at the same time. In that case both situations are passed on to one single card.

Q: What advantage do the FIFA 19 Winter upgrades bring us?
A: The upgrades increase the squads’ quality level, diminishing the differences between the game and real life football. Besides, they can also represent good trading opportunities, mainly when it comes to IF cards.

Q: I already have a squad. What is it good to me?
A: If you’re already “done” with your squad, the upgrades increase your improvement opportunities. If your squad is based on a league, for example, upgrades can improve the players you already have or they can promote others for a position or two.

Q: What cares should I take with these new cards coming?
A: If you want to buy a NIF, make sure you’re not paying the price the UP demands. If you want to sell an UP, make sure you’re not selling for the corresponding NIF price.

  1. Cancelo 84 IF is another weird upgrade. According to the rules it should of been 85 (like Depay). But in this case they upgraded the 84 IF to 86.

  2. Hey Rodrigo,
Do you know if Nicolas Pepe’s (Ligue 1 card) headliner card will upgrade? I am not certain about whether I should invest on him.

    1. Well according to the rules he won’t get an upgrade. But since Rashford’s IF got an upgrade and even Cancelo’s IF, SIF and TIF received the strangest upgrades there is no saying in what will happen.

I’ve just sold Pépé since I bought him for 108k and just made like 25k profit which is nice.

  3. How is it possible that Rashford IF 84 has been upgraded to 86 since a base 82 players IF should be 84.

    1. Found the rule ?

If a stat of his new card surpasses the one of the inform the inform will be upgraded.

I guess in the case of Rashford that has happened.

        1. Hmm not exactly. Since the rule states that ea looks at OVR. In the case of Rashford it is about stats. But I could misread the text.

But let’s see with Ben Yedder IF. His card will get an upgrade to 82. According to the table he should not get an upgrade. However since ea is upgrading players like the new H2H rating the penalty stat could be the one. His IF penalty stat is 74 but within H2H his penalty stat is 76. So this could mean that IF Ben Yedder gets an upgrade to 85 or 86.

Anyway I love your site ?. Lots of great info!

          1. EA randomly upgrades IF cards. Sarabia HL received an upgrade to 88. Ben Yedder stayed at 84. There is no logical explanation for these upgrades.

          2. According to EA when face stats upgrade didn’t ‘touch’ the ones on the inform/special, that card isn’t upgraded. It looks random because we have no idea if it ‘touches’ or not. It’s stupid.

          3. Hi Rene. Yedder didn’t receive an upgrade. Could you please give us another example? The rules we published in this page were provided by EA but maybe there is an extra rule as you say. Cheers

          4. It’s difficult to see since the old informs are not on Futbin anymore. However there is a lot of discussion about Son and Depay. Both players received an upgrade but IF cards didn’t. With Depay it was realt weird since now there is no difference in IF or CL card

  4. Digne is now 81 OVR. Why is his inform still 82??? According to the table above he should be 84 now. Just like Richarlison for example…

  5. João Valentim Telo

Hi I’ve been very bummed that they haven’t release a card for Joao felix Sequeira Benfica latest talent 19 years old 7 goals 3 assist in 13 games in the portuguese legue why is this and will it happen?

  6. Van Dijk SIF really 90? Now his price is 600k, what price you think he’ll reach after upgrade? Thanks

  7. Gabriel fortunato

Ok, but for example Lucas Hernandez who has an IF as CB. His normal card is LB and will receive an upgrade, would that IF receive the upgrade as well?

      1. His otw card just out is 78 that’s an 8+… Is that means that his nif card will be too

  8. Hey
What do you think, will Sanchos POTM card (84 atm) get an upgrade in the same high as his base card?
If he gets +7 his POTM is 91 and his Future Star a 90, think that might be possible?

  9. Hello!
According to you, Jadon Sancho will get a high upgrade (to be honest, that’s highly likely, otherwise EA don’t pay attention to the kid.) So, his IF is now a 79 card and if his NIF card gets a regular upgrade to being a 79 rated car, how is his actual IF card going to look like? I do not think, that EA will raise it to 86 (but I really hope so, because I have him in my club). Do you think it will become a 82/83 card?

    Best regards!

  10. Tivy Vandelanotte

Will the Jadon Sancho Gold IF card upgrade if the normal silver card goes from 72 to, for example, 79 Gold? Will it upgrade to 83 like say above?

    1. Future stars are the expected rating of the player when they reach their full potential. I think an upgrade will affect those cards

  11. Olá Rodrigo,
What will happen to OTW cards? They will have the same rating as the IF cards I guess.

  12. Kevin Josue Soriano

Can MOTM cards get upgraded ,for example Krzysztof Piatek MOTM is 78 but his normal is 70 so what would his rating refresh be?

  13. So it’s likely that Salah gets an up? then his IF will go up to 90 do you recommend buying his IF now?

    1. If he gets an upgrade, his IFs cards will also get it. However, many people may be already thinking like you and for that reason it’s hard to know if his current price is a fair price or not.

  14. Will UCL and RTTF cards get an upgrade too? For example, if NIF Van Dijk gets +2, what will happen to those cards?

  15. So the IF of werner and pepe as well as felipe anderson won’t get upgraded, is that correct?

  16. No upgrade for Guendouzi?

Kid has been doing absolute bits in the PL this season! I mean the if the future stars cards are anything to go by, he’s being touted as the next Ruud Gullit!

  17. I am still unclear about my existing NIF cards – if the player get upgraded, will they be upgraded as well, or only the new cards will be upgraded? Will that make the regular card less valuable?

      1. Thank you, so the idea would be to buy IF cards of players that are expected to be upgraded now, with the expectation that they will be more valuable later? Is that correct?

  18. Why EaSport dont upgrade players of the SAF (Superliga Argentina de Fútbol) (Ligue from Argentina)
Lisandro Lopez (Striker of Racing Club has 18 goals in 20 games and he didnt get an IF card wtf) every years easports ignores the argentinian league (SORRY FOR MY ENGLISH BUT I DONT SPEAK VERY WELL)

  19. Do these upgrades apply to Futmas cards or Future Stars? I have Torriera, Guendouzi, POTM Auba, POTM Hazard, Eder Militao (Future Card), TIF Pepe, etc.

  20. What about buying a lot of Felipe Anderson 86 or 87 In Form cards to sell after the winter upgrades?? thankss

  21. Lets say van dijk 85 will get a +2 upgrade.. will his potm 89 rated card be upgraded or?

Just wondering since there is a couple of informs also

    1. Let’s see…
First of all, his new NIF rating will be, at least, as big as his existing first in-form’s rating. That way, his IFs will also be upgraded. The question here is ‘how much?”. In your example: NIF 85-87; IF1 86-87; IF2 87-88. If I am not wrong, his POTM will remain with the same rating.

      1. Why does his normal upgrade go to 87 and his first inform goes to 87??? How can a inform be the same rating as a normal card? That first inform would have no value..shoud be normal card 85-87,first inform 86-88,sif 87-89 and potm 89-90 surely

  22. Pls include the updates for winter balls for premier league, series a and laliga. Also ball Champions League Final. Pls update the kits, scoreboard and aboard as well. Thanks in advance
