All Positions

Each team fields eleven players, each assigned a specific position that defines their role and movement on the pitch.

GK Goalkeepers
Goalkeepers serve as the final line of defence, responsible for stopping the opposing team from scoring. They are the only players allowed to handle the ball with their hands and arms, but only within the penalty area. Goalkeepers wear distinct jerseys to stand out from outfield players and the referee.

RB LB Full-Backs
Full-backs play on either side of the centre-backs, protecting the flanks from opposing wingers. Their duties include blocking crosses, intercepting passes into the box, and supporting attacks down the wings.

CB Centre-Backs
Central defenders anchor the heart of the defence. Their main job is to stop opposing strikers and clear the ball from dangerous areas. Strong positioning, aerial dominance, and tackling ability are key traits for this role.

CDM Defensive Midfielders
Positioned just ahead of the defence, defensive midfielders protect the back line by intercepting passes and winning tackles. They redirect play, cover advancing teammates, and maintain defensive balance when the team pushes forward.

CM Central Midfielders
Central midfielders connect defence and attack, influencing the tempo of the game. They contribute both offensively and defensively, supporting build-up play and recovering possession when needed.

CAM Attacking Midfielders
Attacking midfielders operate in advanced positions, using creativity and vision to unlock defences. They are often the playmakers, providing through balls and assists for strikers.

RM LM Wide Midfielders
Right and left midfielders work along the wings, stretching the play and linking with both the full-backs and forwards. They must time their runs well and deliver accurate passes or crosses.

RW LW Wingers
Wingers use pace and dribbling to beat defenders down the flanks. They aim to create scoring chances by crossing or cutting inside to shoot.

ST Strikers
Strikers play closest to the opposition’s goal, focusing on scoring and creating chances. They need strong finishing, positioning, and physical presence to compete with defenders and capitalize on opportunities.

Primary and Secondary Positions

In FC 27, every Player Item has a primary position that represents the player’s main area of operation on the pitch. Players may also have several secondary positions based on other areas in which they can perform.

Secondary positions allow a player to be used in different formations without being considered Out of Position. When placed in any listed position, the player can contribute to squad Chemistry and access the Player Roles available for that position. Their effectiveness within a particular Role still depends on their Role Familiarity.

FC 27 removes the previous limit of three secondary positions per player, giving selected players greater positional flexibility. Wide players may also include the corresponding midfield or attacking position on the same flank, such as RM and RW or LM and LW.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. In Ultimate Team, you cannot permanently change the positions listed on a Player Item. However, you can place the player in any of their primary or secondary positions without applying a Position Modifier Item.
Position Modifier Items were removed in Football Club 24.
Every Player Item has one primary position and may have several secondary positions. In FC 27, players are no longer limited to a maximum of three secondary positions, allowing certain Items to be used in a wider range of formations.

If a player is used outside their primary or secondary positions, they will have zero Individual Chemistry and will not contribute Chemistry points to the squad. However, this does not directly reduce the Individual Chemistry already earned by their teammates.

An Out of Position player can still take part in the match, but will use a simplified version of the assigned Role and perform its positional responsibilities less effectively than a player who is eligible for that position.
Yes. Select a player, tap R2/RT to switch from Growth to Position, and choose the position you want the player to learn.
