FC 27 MATCHMAKING
The FC 27 Matchmaking system works based on your geographic location, your current form, and your platform.
How to Find an Opponent
Have you ever noticed that the game sometimes takes longer to find an opponent or matches you against someone who appears considerably stronger or weaker? This happens because FC 27 does not use the same matchmaking criteria across every online competition.
FC 27 Matchmaking is designed to create fair and competitive online matches while finding a suitable EA Game Data Center and compatible opponents. The criteria used depend on the mode you are playing.
In Ultimate Team Champions, matchmaking considers your location, current Form, platform and cross-play settings. Division Rivals uses your location, Rank and platform in Divisions 10 to 1, while Elite Division matchmaking replaces Rank with Skill Rating.
Connection quality can affect how responsive a match feels, but it is not presented as an independent matchmaking criterion. Before accepting an online match, you can check the connection quality indicator and estimated ping shown by the game.
Generally speaking, EA SPORTS FC 27 online matchmaking may consider the following factors:
- Your current Form, Rank or Skill Rating, depending on the competition;
- Your location and the EA Game Data Center selected for the match;
- Your platform and cross-play settings.
Current Form
Current Form is a matchmaking factor specifically used in Ultimate Team Champions Play-Offs and Finals. It represents your results within the Champions competition you are currently playing rather than your recent performance across every FC 27 mode.
Your Form starts at zero when you begin a Play-Offs or Finals run. Each victory increases it by one, while each defeat reduces it by one. For example, three wins and two defeats would result in a current Form of +1.
The matchmaking system attempts to pair you with opponents who have a similar Form. Players performing well are therefore more likely to face others with a comparable record, while those with more defeats may be matched against players following a similar trajectory.
Form does not carry over between Champions competitions. Your Play-Offs Form is separate from your Finals Form, and each begins at zero. Similar Form helps the system find opponents with comparable results, but it does not guarantee that both players have exactly the same ability or record.
Location
Location is an important factor in FC 27 matchmaking because it helps determine which EA Game Data Center will host the match. Each player connects separately to the selected data center, and the route between the player and that server can influence latency and responsiveness.
Approximate Location Matchmaking helps the game search within a more geographically relevant matchmaking area. However, it does not guarantee that your opponent lives nearby, connects from the same country or experiences the same connection quality.
Your distance from the selected data center is only one part of the connection. Network congestion, routing, Wi-Fi interference and your internet service provider can also affect ping, packet loss and gameplay responsiveness.
Disabling Approximate Location Matchmaking may broaden the available matchmaking pool and make it easier to find opponents in some circumstances. However, it may also result in matches involving a wider geographical area and does not make location or Game Data Center availability irrelevant.
How to Disable Approximate Location Matchmaking
- From the main FC 27 screen, navigate to [Customise];
- Select [Online Settings];
- Select [Matchmaking Options];
- Change [Approximate Location Matchmaking] to [No].
Platform
Your platform and cross-play settings influence which players can be included in the FC 27 matchmaking pool. With cross-play enabled, compatible PlayStation, Xbox and PC players can face each other within the same platform generation.
PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC form one cross-play group, while PlayStation 4 and Xbox One form another. Players cannot match across these two generations, regardless of their cross-play preference. Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 do not support cross-play with other platforms.
Cross-play is enabled by default. Turning it off limits matchmaking to players using the same platform, which reduces the available player pool and may increase the time required to find an opponent. It does not necessarily provide a better connection, as online performance also depends on the selected Game Data Center and each player’s network conditions.
How to Enable Cross-Play
- From the main FC 27 screen, navigate to [Customise];
- Select [Online Settings];
- Select [Matchmaking Options];
- Change [Cross-Play Enabled] to [Yes].
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. If cross-play is enabled, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC players can match with each other in supported modes. PlayStation 4 and Xbox One form a separate cross-play group. Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 do not support cross-play with other platforms.
In Division Rivals Co-Op, matchmaking uses the Rank of the higher-ranked player in Divisions 10 to 1. In the Elite Division, it uses the Skill Rating of the higher-rated player. Location, platform and cross-play settings are also considered.
Champions Play-Offs and Finals matchmaking is based on your location, your current Form within the competition, and your platform and cross-play settings. Form starts at zero, increases by one after each win and decreases by one after each loss. The system attempts to find opponents with a similar Form, although an exact match is not guaranteed. Play-Offs and Finals maintain separate Form records.
Matchmaking is different depending on whether you are playing in Division 1 to 10, or you are playing the Elite Division.
Divisions 10–1
Matchmaking is based on your location, your Rank, and your platform and cross-play settings. In Co-Op, the Rank of the higher-ranked player is used.
Elite Division Matchmaking
Matchmaking is based on your location, your Skill Rating, and your platform and cross-play settings. Players with a Skill Rating of 2200 or higher matchmake as if they had a Skill Rating of 2200, helping highly rated players find matches more easily. In Co-Op, the Skill Rating of the higher-rated player is used.
