FC 26 Assignments enable you to pre-select the player you want as captain or designate them for taking set-pieces, including penalties, free kicks, and corners.

The former Roles screen in Team Management has been renamed to Assignments in Football Club 25. Here, you can pre-select the team captain, set-piece takers, and key corner kick roles, including:

  • Captain;
  • Left Short Free Kick;
  • Right Short Free Kick;

  • Penalties;
  • Left Corner;
  • Right Corner;
  • Attacking Corner: Target Player;
  • Attacking Corner: Near Post;

FC 26 assignments apply only to the starting eleven players. If you make a substitution, the incoming player will not inherit the outgoing player’s assignment. A single player can be assigned to multiple roles.

How to Set Up FC 26 Assignments
  1. From the main Ultimate Team screen, press R1/RB three times to select [Club];
  2. Select [Squad];
  3. Press L3 to popup [Squad Actions];
  4. Select [Team Management];
  5. Press R1/RB once to go to the [Assignments] tab;
  6. Make the desired changes and save.
Before kick-off, you can set player assignments by going to Edit Lineup > Squad Actions > Assignments, and you can also pause the match to make changes during gameplay.

Your last configuration is saved automatically, so you don’t have to redo your setup each time. You can configure assignments within game plans and access them from the D-Pad.

The Auto-Assign feature, which automatically selected the best players for each role based on their attributes, is no longer available in FC 26.

Captain

The player who will be the captain by default.

How to Choose
This assignment does not influence the game. It’s only relevant to some animations that do not affect your team’s performance. Choose a player of your preference freely.

Left / Right Short Free Kick

The player who will take the short free kicks by default.

How to Choose
Identify the player on your team with the highest proficiency in the specified attributes, prioritizing in descending order of importance. Ensure that the selected kick-taker corresponds to the side of the opponent’s goal where the free kick is located; for instance, if the kick-taker is left-footed and the free kick is on the right side, consider choosing an alternative. Take care not to compromise other essential roles when making this selection during set-piece scenarios.

Long Free Kick

The player who will take the long free kicks by default.

Penalties

The player who will take penalty kicks by default.

Identify the player on your team with the highest proficiency in the specified attributes (in descending order of importance) and a preferred left foot. Exercise caution to avoid selecting someone crucial for other assignments during this type of set-piece.

Left / Right Corner

The player who will take lef/right corners by default.

How to Choose
Find the player on your team who is the best in the mentioned attributes (in descending order of importance) and whose preferred foot is the left (for left corners) or right (for right corners). Be careful not to pick someone you need for other assignments during this type of set-piece.

  • Short Passing
    It ranks how well a player performs a short / ground pass to his teammate.
  • Curve
    It measures the player’s ability to curve the ball when passing and shooting.
  • Free Kick Accuracy
    It measures the player’s accuracy for taking Free Kicks.
  • Preferred Foot
    Depending on whether the corner are taken from the right or left side, it’s preferable for the players to be right-footed or left-footed.
Tip
When selecting a kick taker, the most important stats of the selected player are immediately displayed. Take note that you can always change the game’s kick taker by holding the R2 / RT button when taking a corner.

Target Man

The player who will be the focus of the corner kick.

How to Choose
Identify the player on your team with the highest proficiency in the specified attributes. He must be tall, with strong physical attributes, excellent heading ability, and good positioning to maximize scoring opportunities from crosses and long balls. The players in the Corner Kick Support assignments are unique and cannot be repeated. The Corner Kick Taker also cannot be part of the support.

How to Choose
Select a player with excellent shot power and long shots, but ensure you do not assign someone vital for defensive transitions. Support assignments must be unique and cannot overlap with the Corner Kick Taker.

    Reflects the player’s ability to find the best space to receive and shoot.

Attacking Corner: Defensive Cover

The player who stays back outside the penalty area to provide defensive security and protect against counter-attacks during an Attacking Corner.

How to Choose
Pick a player with strong defensive awareness and pace to quickly break up opposing counter-attacks. Ensure no overlap with the Corner Kick Taker or other support roles.

    Ability to read the game and position effectively to break up attacks.
  • Standing Tackle
    Effectiveness in regaining possession through tackles.
  • Acceleration
    Determines how quickly the player can reach top speed in defensive transitions.
  • Stamina
    Ensures the player can maintain defensive duties throughout the match.

Defensive Corner: Threat Marker

The player assigned to closely mark the opponent’s most dangerous aerial threat during Defensive Corners.

How to Choose
Choose a strong, tall defender with exceptional marking and jumping skills, ensuring this responsibility does not conflict with other defensive roles.

    Quality and height of leaps to clear aerial balls.
  • Strength
    Important for physical duels in the box.

Defensive Corner: Post Watcher

The player responsible for guarding the area just inside the goal, usually supporting the goalkeeper in defending low or quick crosses during Defensive Corners.

How to Choose
Select a player with good reactions and composure, who can stay alert on the goal line, but is not essential for marking main aerial threats.

    Speed in responding to deflections or quick plays near the goalpost.
  • Composure
    Perform reliably under pressure in dangerous areas.
  • Defensive Awareness
    Essential for reading the play and making clearances.
  • Jumping
    Helps to clear balls directed at the post area.

Defensive Corner: Near Post

The player who guards the near post area during a Defensive Corner, helping intercept low balls or tight-angle shots.

How to Choose
Pick a defender with good anticipation and quick reactions, but not your tallest central defender, as they may be needed elsewhere.

    Quick to respond to flick-ons or short crosses.

    Understands positioning near the post.
  • Acceleration
    Ability to move rapidly at short distances.

Defensive Corner: Back Post

The player stationed at or near the back post, providing additional coverage for balls directed to the far side during Defensive Corners.

How to Choose
Assign a defender with high defensive awareness and good heading, preferably not your main aerial duelist. Avoid role duplication with marking assignments.

Left Throw-in Taker

The player responsible for taking throw-ins on the left side of the pitch.

How to Choose
Opt for a player with good short passing and throwing power, usually someone comfortable in wide positions.

    Ensures safe and effective delivery to teammates.
  • Throw-In Power
    Ability to throw the ball further down the line if needed.
  • Vision
    Can spot attacking or safe options quickly.
  • Composure
    Remains calm to execute precise throws under pressure.

Right Throw-in Taker

The player responsible for taking throw-ins on the right side of the pitch.

How to Choose
Pick a player with strong short passing and vision, usually a right-sided fullback or winger.

Most Important Attributes
  • Short Passing
    Maintains possession after the throw-in.
  • Throw-In Power
    Useful for delivering longer throws when needed.
  • Vision
    Recognizes attacking opportunities or safe passes.
  • Ball Control
    Important when receiving a return pass after the throw.
Frequently Asked Questions
FC 26 Assignments allow you to choose in advance the player you want to be the captain or the set-pieces takers.
There are two ways to set up player assignments in FC 26:

  1. From the main Ultimate Team screen, press R1/RB twice to select the [Club] tab;
  2. Select [Squad];

You can switch the kick-taker during a game without pausing by holding R2 or RT, depending on your console. Unlike when you choose the kick-taker in the roles screen, this decision will only impact that specific set piece. The player designated in the player roles screen will take charge in the subsequent set piece.
You don’t have to change the captain unless you want. They have no effect on the gameplay.
