FC 26 Assignments enable you to pre-select the player you want as captain or designate them for taking set-pieces, including penalties, free kicks, and corners.

The former Roles screen in Team Management has been renamed to Assignments in Football Club 25. Here, you can pre-select the team captain, set-piece takers, and key corner kick roles, including:

  • Captain;
  • Left Short Free Kick;
  • Right Short Free Kick;
  • Long Free Kick;
  • Penalties;
  • Left Corner;
  • Right Corner;
  • Attacking Corner: Target Player;
  • Attacking Corner: Near Post;
  • Attacking Corner: Back Post;
  • Attacking Corner: Top of Box;
  • Attacking Corner: Defensive Cover;
  • Defensive Corner: Threat Marker;
  • Defensive Corner: Post Watcher;
  • Defensive Corner: Near Post;
  • Defensive Corner: Back Post;
  • Left Throw-in Taker;
  • Right Throw-in Taker.
FC 26 assignments apply only to the starting eleven players. If you make a substitution, the incoming player will not inherit the outgoing player’s assignment. A single player can be assigned to multiple roles.

How to Set Up FC 26 Assignments
  1. From the main Ultimate Team screen, press R1/RB three times to select [Club];
  2. Select [Squad];
  3. Press L3 to popup [Squad Actions];
  4. Select [Team Management];
  5. Press R1/RB once to go to the [Assignments] tab;
  6. Make the desired changes and save.
Assignments

Before kick-off, you can set player assignments by going to Edit Lineup > Squad Actions > Assignments, and you can also pause the match to make changes during gameplay.

Your last configuration is saved automatically, so you don’t have to redo your setup each time. You can configure assignments within game plans and access them from the D-Pad.

The Auto-Assign feature, which automatically selected the best players for each role based on their attributes, is no longer available in FC 26.

Captain

The player who will be the captain by default.

How to Choose
This assignment does not influence gameplay. It only affects certain animations and has no impact on team performance. Choose a player according to your preference.

Most Important Attributes
  • Overall Rating
    Indicates leadership capability and general skill.
  • Age
    Often reflects experience and influence in the squad.

Left / Right Short Free Kick

The player who will take the short free kicks by default.

How to Choose
Identify the player on your team with the highest proficiency in the specified attributes, prioritizing in descending order of importance. Ensure that the selected kick-taker corresponds to the side of the opponent’s goal where the free kick is located; for instance, if the kick-taker is left-footed and the free kick is on the right side, consider choosing an alternative. Take care not to compromise other essential roles when making this selection during set-piece scenarios.

Long Free Kick

The player who will take the long free kicks by default.

How to Choose
Identify the player on your team with the highest proficiency in the specified attributes (in descending order of importance). Exercise caution to avoid selecting someone crucial for other assignments during this type of set-piece.

Penalties

The player who will take penalty kicks by default.

How to Choose
Identify the player on your team with the highest proficiency in the specified attributes (in descending order of importance) and a preferred left foot. Exercise caution to avoid selecting someone crucial for other assignments during this type of set-piece.

Left / Right Corner

The player who will take lef/right corners by default.

How to Choose
Find the player on your team who is the best in the mentioned attributes (in descending order of importance) and whose preferred foot is the left (for left corners) or right (for right corners). Be careful not to pick someone you need for other assignments during this type of set-piece.

    It measures how accurately the player crosses the ball during normal running and free-kick set pieces.
  • Short Passing
    It ranks how well a player performs a short / ground pass to his teammate.
  • Curve
    It measures the player’s ability to curve the ball when passing and shooting.
  • Free Kick Accuracy
    It measures the player’s accuracy for taking Free Kicks.
  • Preferred Foot
    Depending on whether the corner are taken from the right or left side, it’s preferable for the players to be right-footed or left-footed.
Tip
When selecting a kick taker, the most important stats of the selected player are immediately displayed. Take note that you can always change the game’s kick taker by holding the R2 / RT button when taking a corner.

Target Player

The player who will be the primary target for the corner kick.

How to Choose
Select a player with strong physical presence, excellent heading ability, and good positioning to maximize scoring chances from crosses and long balls. Ensure this choice does not conflict with other Corner Kick Support roles, and the Corner Kick Taker cannot be part of the support.

The player who will be positioned on or near the near post during an Attacking Corner.

The player positioned at the top of the penalty area, ready to capitalize on a cleared ball or attempt a long-range shot during an Attacking Corner.

How to Choose
Select a player with good technical ability and a strong, accurate shot. Ensure the player is capable of receiving and distributing the ball efficiently without compromising defensive transitions, and avoid assigning someone already key in other support roles.

  • Preferred Foot
    Ensures the player can comfortably shoot or pass using their stronger foot.

Attacking Corner: Defensive Cover

The player who stays back outside the penalty area to provide defensive security and protect against counter-attacks during an Attacking Corner.

How to Choose
Pick a player with excellent game reading and anticipation skills who can quickly react to counter-attacks. Ensure the role does not overlap with the Corner Kick Taker or other support positions.

    Helps regain possession and break up opposing attacks before they develop.

Defensive Corner: Threat Marker

The player assigned to closely mark the opponent’s most dangerous aerial threat during Defensive Corners.

How to Choose
Select a tall and physically dominant defender who excels in aerial duels. Ensure this player’s role does not overlap with other key defensive assignments.

    Taller players are more effective at contesting aerial balls and winning headers.
  • Jumping
    Enables higher and more effective leaps to clear crosses or challenge attackers.
  • Heading Accuracy
    Key for clearing balls defensively with precision during set pieces.

Defensive Corner: Post Watcher

The player responsible for guarding the area just inside the goal, usually supporting the goalkeeper in defending low or quick crosses during Defensive Corners.

How to Choose
Select a player who reads the game well, reacts quickly, and can anticipate dangerous situations near the goalpost. They should complement your main aerial defenders rather than compete for the same role.

    Crucial for understanding positioning and anticipating threats at the post.
  • Interceptions
    Helps regain possession or cut out low crosses near the goal line.
  • Reactions
    Quick response to deflections, shots, or unexpected passes in the post area.

Defensive Corner: Near Post

The player who guards the near post area during a Defensive Corner, helping intercept low balls or tight-angle shots.

How to Choose
Choose a strong and physically imposing defender who can handle aerial duels and block close-range attempts. This player should be quick to react but not your primary aerial marker.

    Key for clearing near-post deliveries with precision.
  • Strength
    Helps win physical battles and hold position under pressure.
  • Height
    Taller players are more effective at intercepting crosses to the near post.

Defensive Corner: Back Post

The player stationed at or near the back post, providing additional coverage for balls directed to the far side during Defensive Corners.

How to Choose
Assign a defender who is alert, reads the game well, and reacts quickly to second balls. This player should complement your main aerial defender without overlapping roles.

    Ensures correct positioning to defend far-post threats.
  • Interceptions
    Improves chances of cutting off low crosses or flick-ons.

Left Throw-in Taker

The player responsible for taking throw-ins on the left side of the pitch.

How to Choose
Opt for a player with solid physical presence and good defensive instincts, especially if the throw-in is contested. Fullbacks or wide midfielders are often a good fit.

Most Important Attribute
  • Strength
    Useful when shielding the ball or contesting physical challenges after the throw.

Right Throw-in Taker

The player responsible for taking throw-ins on the right side of the pitch.

How to Choose
Choose a player who not only delivers accurate throws but is also well-positioned to recover possession if the ball is lost. A right-back with strong defensive instincts is ideal.

    Useful when shielding the ball or contesting physical challenges after the throw.
Frequently Asked Questions
FC 26 Assignments allow you to choose in advance the player you want to be the captain or the set-pieces takers.
There are two ways to set up player assignments in FC 26:

  1. From the main Ultimate Team screen, press R1/RB twice to select the [Club] tab;
  2. Select [Squad];
  3. Press L2/LT to popup [Squad Actions];
  4. Scroll down to [Team Management];

You can switch the kick-taker during a game without pausing by holding R2 or RT, depending on your console. Unlike when you choose the kick-taker in the roles screen, this decision will only impact that specific set piece. The player designated in the player roles screen will take charge in the subsequent set piece.
You don’t have to change the captain unless you want. They have no effect on the gameplay.
