FIFA 20 Player’s Roles

Find out how to properly define the FIFA 20 player roles

You created a squad with good players and decent chemistry. You also picked your favourite formation but, even knowing you have good FIFA skills, you still don’t understand why you don’t win more often, right? Well, maybe something is missing. Most of the people ignore that, when they have their team almost ready, they need to make the final adjustments to make that team play the way they want. They need to give it their identity. If you feel that this may be happening to you, you still have to set up (in descending order of importance):

Tactics
Player Instructions
Player Roles

Today we will explain how the FIFA 20 player roles work and how they can be useful for your team.

The player’s roles allow you to choose in advance the player you want to be responsible for taking set pieces, including penalties, free kicks and corners (on both sides). Do you know when you want a specific player to shoot a penalty but the game insists on putting another teammate? Well, you can specify an instruction for that player and he will become the default option. This is done using the players’ roles.

You can access the FIFA 20 player’s roles screen following the path Ultimate Team > Squads > Active Squad > Squad Actions > Custom Tactics > Roles. Before starting a match, you can also make changes, selecting Edit Lineup > Squad Actions > Player Roles. Even after the game starts, you can pause it and make new adjustments. The game will always save your last configuration which means that you don’t have to set up every time you are going to play. In fact, you can change the kick-taker during the game itself, without having to pause the game. Just hold R2 or RT, depending on your console. The difference from doing it on the player’s roles screen is that this way, your decision will only have effect for that particular set piece. That is, in the next set piece, the player who will be in charge of it, will be the one that has been defined in the player’s roles screen. Note that this year you can configure a role via game plans and use it from the D-Pad

FIFA 20 player’s roles are only assigned to the players of the starting eleven. If you make a substitution, the player who comes in will not follow the role of the player who goes out.

Before we explain role to role how to set up them, it is necessary to draw attention to the fact that the game itself facilitates this configuration. There is a feature, on the bottom of the screen, that picks the best player for each role, based on their attributes. The Auto-Assignment feature does a good job for you as for player roles assignment. If you’re not sure about the roles, just leave the job to the CPU by selecting Auto-Assign and resetting to the default assignments.

Another useful feature is shown to you when you are selecting the kick-takers. To make your life easier, the most important stats of the selected player are immediately displayed, depending on the role you are assigning. Take note that you can always change the kick taker in the game buy holding R2 / RT button when taking corners, free kicks or penalties.

  1. I haven’t found anywhere how does it effect if I set player into different position. (example in online friendlies)
    Example: LB or LWB
    CB or LCB
Or LF/LW/CF/ST/LAM/AM what is the difference how the player reacts of behaves in these different instances.
    Any ideas?

  2. Bronzeballer

Long pass is when the ball is in the air only? If I am doing a (long) ground pass from deep in the own half over the whole pitch to the winger running in opponents half, which player abiltiy matters? Short or long pass?

    Thanks in advance

  3. while choosing roles, attributes to be considered after applying chemistry style or before….
