All the new FIFA 19 Gameplay Features Explained

The four new gameplay features

From tactical approach to every technical touch, Control The Pitch in every moment with new gameplay features in EA SPORTS FIFA 19. The brand-new Active Touch System allows for closer control, Dynamic Tactics enables deeper and more accessible squad setups, 50/50 Battles enables greater physicality and more user skill when challenging for loose balls, and Timed Finishing elevates user control in striking. Let’s find out more about these new FIFA 19 gameplay features.

Active Touch System

The new Active Touch System fundamentally changes the way you receive and strike the ball, providing closer control, improved fluidity, more creativity and increased player personality. Utilize a suite of new first touch tools, like the disguised trap, flick-up volleys, or even skill-specific animations, like the Neymar Trap, to beat your opponent and create scoring opportunities.

The Active Touch system in FIFA 19 revolutionizes what you can do with the ball at your feet, opening up areas of gameplay that have never been explored before.

This new way of receiving, striking, and moving with the ball feels incredibly natural and fluid, which lets you play in fresh, creative ways. Get closer control, inject more player personality into every movement, and feel inspired on the pitch with a slew of tricks, flicks, traps, and feints that make every touch of the ball smoother and more fluid.

Numerous tools and animations have been added to the ball control system to provide more variety in moving the ball. Specifically, there are now multiple means of trapping the ball, such as the “disguise trap,” a feint used to fool defenders into moving the wrong direction with very subtle first touch movement. Get closer to the real world game by using the same moves that pros like Toni Kroos use to create space, send defenders the wrong way, and open up the game for your team.

Similar to the new ways of trapping the ball, a variety of flick animations have also been added to allow for deeper creativity in attack. Players can use their head, chest, knees, and feet to flick the ball, change direction, confuse defenders, and open up space that they can exploit. Just like Kylian Mbappé bamboozles defenders with his bag of tricks, you can do things with the ball in FIFA 19 that you never thought were possible and leave your opponent shaking his head in defeat.

By unlocking so many innovative methods to interact with the ball and injecting a higher level of control into every movement, Active Touch makes FIFA 19 feel more realistic than any other moment in the series’ rich history.

Dynamic Tactics

A re-imagined system gives players the tools to set multiple tactical approaches, offering in-depth customization pre-match, as well as more options for dynamic in-match adjustments simply from the D-Pad. Each tactical approach combines formations, mentalities, and both attacking and defensive play styles, enabling you to easily customize your play to any situation

If you’ve ever wanted more control over your FIFA team’s tactics and the ability to dive into the gritty tactical details that your favorite real-world managers deal with every week, you’ll love our latest update to match preparation in FIFA — Dynamic Tactics. This new feature in FIFA 19 provides deeper, more advanced control over your team’s tactics both before and during matches. See all of your changes and adjustments, no matter how small, executed by your players on the pitch as you play.

Pre-match preparation returns with the in-depth, custom features that you know and love; you can pick players, set a formation, assign roles, give instructions, and customize your tactics. But with Dynamic Tactics in FIFA 19, you can also create multiple game plans that you can switch between during a match.

Every option that you have when creating your pre-match plan can be assigned to one of your custom game plans, so you aren’t constantly going to the pause menu when you need your team to play differently. Dynamic Tactics also allows for deeper tactical customization, using a range of sliders to tweak the various aspects of your offensive and defensive approaches. Your custom game plans are mapped to the D-Pad (on consoles), so that you can quickly change between them during matches.

Even though tactics have been a big part of the FIFA franchise for a long time, Dynamic Tactics has overhauled the entire system to make setting up your team more important than ever. Your team will execute your approach in an obvious manner, so that you can get a visual idea of how it’s working on the pitch. For example, if you choose a possession-based tactic, your players will support their teammate in possession and provide safe passing options. If you adjust for faster build-up play, your players will move quickly up the field and make riskier runs to try and create immediate chances.

Any player can use this to their advantage—tactics have been balanced perfectly so that every approach has an effective counter-tactic. If you can identify what your opponent is using, you can respond quickly during a match by changing your own tactics.

New tactical options have also been added based on player feedback to help counter some of the more popular and difficult tactics. If you’re facing a team that tends to “park the bus,” for example, you can select the option “Pressure on Heavy Touch” to have your players constantly close down opponents and force them to make risky plays. Whether you’re looking to get more control over your team’s tactics, prepare a game plan for any situation, or seamlessly tweak things during a match, you’ll get something useful out of the new Dynamic Tactics feature in FIFA 19.

50/50 Battles

With 50/50 Battles, user reactions and player attributes determine the outcome for winning loose balls across the pitch. With increased teammate intelligence and spatial awareness, every challenge matters in the fight for possession.

Timed Finishing

Whether it’s a hit from outside the box, a precision header, or a deft touch, timed finishing adds a new layer of control to your chances in front of goal.

One of the most exciting and useful gameplay innovations in FIFA 19 is Timed Finishing, an entirely new mechanic that lets you make any shot world class with just one extra, well-timed button tap. As the name implies, timing is key with this feature, adding a new layer of risk/reward to shooting in FIFA 19.

The basic process for taking a shot doesn’t change, but if you want to make your shots potentially unstoppable with this accuracy and power boost, it’s as simple as tapping the “shoot” button a second time after the initial button tap. But that’s the easy part; what makes this mechanic a challenge is timing your second tap perfectly; if you tap it too early or too late, it could actually make your shot a little bit worse. With the FIFA Trainer turned on, you’ll see a colored bar over your player’s head with sliders. Your second tap should be right when the sliders hit the green zone in the middle. If you successfully unlock a Timed Finish, you’ll see a short message above the bar that says, “Great Timing!”

Once you get the hang of the process, you can turn the Trainer off. While the bar and message will no longer appear during a Timed Finish attempt, you can still see whether or not your attempt was successful via the player indicator triangle. The triangle’s outline will glow green if you have successfully achieved a Timed Finish.

Timed Finishing applies to any type of open-play strike, whether it’s a header, volley, finesse shot—even a bicycle kick. But the more difficult and quick the shot attempt is, the higher your margin for error will be. Practice your timing with all types of shots so that you can master this and take your FIFA game to the next level.
